156 The Inner Well — Tazo You are made of water. Not the kind from the tap. Before there were words, there was the hum. The first sound a mother makes to a child who is crying and cannot be comforted is not a word. It is a tone — low, sustained, produced deep in the chest, offered without explanation. The child settles. The body knows before the mind can follow. This is the oldest medicine in the world and it has no inventor. The priestesses of Isis hummed through the rites of Osiris, the rites of gathering what had been scattered. Celtic women kept the springs of Brigid and Sulis, and sang at the wells in tones that matched the water moving through stone. India kept it as Bhramari, the humming bee breath. The Sufis kept it as dhikr. Each was pointing at the same thing from a different side. In 2002 the laboratory arrived. Humming was shown to raise nitric oxide in the sinuses fifteen to twenty fold over quiet breathing — the gas that widens the vessels, carries the oxygen, and settles the inflammation. The lowest tones produce the most, and the lowest tones are the ones a woman's chest makes at rest. What the biochemistry calls a gas, the older traditions called water. The hum opens the channel. The channel fills. The filling is felt as moisture, in a place that had been dry a long time. This is a practice book.
