Plato said: "It is not the darkness we know that is the most Dark, it is the Darkness that we don't know - that is the most dark."

Let us think here, consciousness makes it possible for us to extend our Comprehension, and even so to extend it so that we begin to perceive something beyond us. 

There is a riddle about this, St John of the Cross experienced his 'Dark Night of the Soul' as he was in love with a nun.  This experience caused his 'Dark Night of the Soul'.

Can you explain why this occurred when, as we contemplate it, is it not Love that we except to feel 'bliss' and 'light'?
